engine block

Motor's metal core

An engine block is the main structural component of an internal combustion engine—a solid casting, usually metal, containing the cylinders where pistons move and fuel burns.

It houses or supports most other engine parts: crankshaft, camshaft, water jackets for cooling.

Mechanics speak of a cracked block when the casting itself is damaged, often meaning the engine is beyond economical repair.
