piston ring
Engine compression band
A piston ring is a split metal ring that fits into a groove around a piston in an engine or compressor.
Piston rings seal the combustion chamber, control oil distribution, and transfer heat from the piston to the cylinder wall.
Worn piston rings cause oil burning and loss of compression: The engine was burning oil because the piston rings were shot.
