phylacteries

Bound scriptural containers

Phylacteries are small leather boxes containing Hebrew scripture verses, worn by observant Jewish men during weekday morning prayers.

One is strapped to the forehead, one to the left arm near the heart.

The practice follows Deuteronomy's command to bind God's words as a sign.

Also called tefillin.

In broader usage, phylactery can mean any amulet or charm worn for protection.
