outboards

Detachable boat motors

Outboards are motors mounted externally on the back of a boat, as opposed to inboard engines housed within the hull.

The term covers both the engines themselves and boats equipped with them: We rented a couple of outboards for the fishing trip.

As an adverb or adjective, outboard means toward or at the outer edge of a vessel or aircraft: the outboard engine on the wing.
