island-hopping

Visiting multiple isles

Island-hopping is traveling through a chain of islands, stopping at several in succession: We spent two weeks island-hopping in Greece.

The term originated as a World War II military strategy in the Pacific, where Allied forces captured selected islands while bypassing others to advance toward Japan.

Now it usually describes leisure travel through archipelagos.
