outboard motors
Detachable marine propulsion
Outboard motors are self-contained propulsion units mounted on the outside of a boat's stern, combining engine, gearbox, and propeller in a single removable package.
They swivel to steer the boat and can be tilted up when not in use or in shallow water.
The term distinguishes them from inboard engines, which are built into the hull: We rented a skiff with a small outboard motor.
