oil well

Underground crude source

An oil well is a hole drilled into the earth to extract petroleum.

The term covers both the drilling shaft and the surface equipment—the derrick, pumps, and piping.

Wells may be drilled on land or offshore.

A gusher is a well where oil pressure forces crude to the surface without pumping.

They struck oil on the third well.
