source rock
Hydrocarbon generating formation
Source rock is a geological term for sedimentary rock containing enough organic matter to generate oil or natural gas when subjected to heat and pressure over geological time.
Shale is the most common source rock.
Petroleum geologists identify source rocks to trace where hydrocarbons originated: The Bakken Formation is a prolific source rock in North Dakota.
