wellbore

Oil extraction tunnel

A wellbore is the hole drilled into the earth to extract oil, gas, water, or other resources—the physical cavity itself, as distinct from the casing or equipment installed within it.

The term appears in petroleum engineering and drilling contexts: The wellbore extended three thousand feet below the surface.

Also called a borehole.
