pumpjack

Beam pumps petroleum

A pumpjack is the mechanical device used to extract oil from underground wells when natural pressure is insufficient.

Its distinctive shape—a pivoting beam that rocks up and down, driving a rod into the earth—dots oil fields worldwide.

Also called a nodding donkey, horsehead pump, or beam pump.

Pumpjacks lined the horizon across the Texas plains.
