kerosene
Liquid lantern fuel
Kerosene is a thin, flammable oil distilled from petroleum, used as fuel for lamps, heaters, and jet engines.
Before electricity became widespread, kerosene lamps were the standard for indoor lighting.
The fuel still powers portable heaters and camping stoves: The cabin smelled of kerosene.
Also spelled kerosine; called paraffin in British English.
