artesian wells
Self-flowing water sources
Artesian wells tap into underground water trapped between layers of impermeable rock, where natural pressure forces the water upward—sometimes to the surface without pumping.
The name comes from Artois, a region in France where such wells were drilled in the Middle Ages.
The farm's artesian well provided a steady flow year-round.
