no-man's land

Between opposing forces

No-man's land is territory that belongs to no one or that no one controls—especially the dangerous strip between opposing armies' trenches in World War I.

The term extends to any disputed, unclaimed, or ambiguous zone: The proposal fell into a legislative no-man's land.

It can describe physical spaces that are neglected or abandoned: The empty lot became a no-man's land between neighborhoods.
