twilight zone

Between day, night

A twilight zone is an ambiguous or intermediate state between two conditions—neither fully one thing nor another.

The phrase gained currency from the 1959 television series exploring the eerie space between reality and imagination.

Now it describes any disorienting situation where normal rules don't seem to apply: The hours after the accident felt like a twilight zone.

Originally, twilight zone referred to the ocean depths where light barely penetrates.
