terra incognita

Unmapped, unexplored land

Terra incognita is Latin for "unknown land," used in English to describe unexplored or unmapped territory.

Old maps labeled mysterious regions *terra incognita*, sometimes adding illustrations of sea monsters.

The phrase now applies figuratively to any unfamiliar domain: Quantum physics remains terra incognita to most people.

Plural: terrae incognitae, though the singular often serves for both.
