nitrocellulose

Flammable film material

Nitrocellulose is a highly flammable compound made by treating cellulose with nitric acid.

It was the basis for early photographic film and celluloid, and remains important in explosives, lacquers, and nail polish.

In concentrated form it's called guncotton.

The material's notorious flammability caused devastating theater and archive fires before safety film replaced it.
