8mm
Home movie width
8mm refers to a film gauge measuring 8 millimeters in width, popular for amateur home movies from the 1930s through the 1980s.
The format offered an affordable way for families to capture birthdays, vacations, and everyday moments before video cameras became widespread.
Super 8, an improved version introduced in 1965, provided better image quality and easier loading.
Today 8mm evokes nostalgia for grainy, flickering footage of the past, and the format has seen revival among filmmakers seeking a vintage aesthetic.
