vulcanite

Cured rubber compound

Vulcanite is hard rubber made by heating natural rubber with sulfur—a process called vulcanization.

The material was widely used in the 19th and early 20th centuries for combs, fountain pen barrels, denture bases, and electrical insulation.

It's largely been replaced by modern plastics but still appears in specialized applications.
