fire retardants
Combustion-slowing chemicals
Fire retardants are substances that slow or prevent the spread of fire.
They work by reducing flammability or delaying ignition of materials they're applied to.
Firefighters drop fire retardants from aircraft to create barriers against wildfires.
The term also covers chemicals added to fabrics, plastics, and building materials during manufacturing: The children's pajamas were treated with fire retardants.
