naval mine
Underwater contact explosive
A naval mine is an explosive device placed in water to destroy ships or submarines.
Mines may float at the surface, anchor at a set depth, or rest on the seabed, detonating on contact or when sensors detect a vessel nearby.
The harbor was closed after naval mines were discovered.
Clearing minefields remains dangerous work long after conflicts end.
