mullions

Vertical window strips

Mullions are the vertical bars dividing the panes of a window, especially in older architectural styles.

They provide structural support and create the grid pattern characteristic of traditional windows: The morning light filtered through the mullions.

The horizontal counterparts are called transoms or muntins.
