spacer

Maintains a distance

A spacer is something that creates or maintains distance between objects.

In hardware, spacers are small pieces—washers, tubes, or blocks—that keep components properly separated: Use a spacer to prevent the screws from touching the circuit board.

In typography and design, spacers create gaps between elements.

In medicine, a spacer is a chamber attached to an inhaler that helps deliver medication more effectively.

The word also applies to anything functioning as filler or placeholder: She used a few spacer tracks to round out the album.
