transoms
Windows above doors
Transoms are horizontal crossbars, especially in architecture.
A transom divides a window from a door below it, or separates sections of a window.
The transom window—or simply transom—is the small window above a door, historically left open for ventilation: She heard voices through the open transom.
In nautical use, the transom is the flat surface at a boat's stern.
