mounds

Small earthen hills

Mounds are raised piles or heaps—of earth, sand, snow, or other material.

Some are natural formations; others are deliberately built, like ancient burial mounds or pitcher's mounds in baseball.

The word extends to any heap-like accumulation: mounds of paperwork, a mound of mashed potatoes.

To mound is to pile into such a shape.
