henges

Ancient circular monuments

Henges is the plural of henge, a type of prehistoric monument found mainly in Britain—a circular area enclosed by a ditch with an external bank.

Stonehenge is the most famous, though ironically its prominent stones make it atypical; most henges were earthwork enclosures without major stone structures.

The term comes from Stonehenge itself, extracted backward from that site's name.
