standing stones
Prehistoric upright rocks
Standing stones are large upright rocks set into the ground by prehistoric peoples, typically arranged singly or in formations.
Stonehenge is the most famous example.
They appear throughout Britain, Ireland, and parts of Europe, their original purposes—astronomical, ceremonial, territorial—mostly unknown.
The term evokes ancient mystery and pagan ritual: The standing stones cast long shadows at sunset.
