microfloppy

Three-and-a-half inch

A microfloppy is the 3.5-inch floppy disk that became standard for personal computers in the late 1980s and 1990s, replacing the larger 5.25-inch disks.

Despite the rigid plastic case, the term floppy persisted because the magnetic disk inside remained flexible.

Microfloppy disks typically held 1.44 megabytes of data—generous at the time but now quaint.

The format became obsolete by the mid-2000s as CDs, USB drives, and network storage took over.
