microfiche
Archival film sheet
Microfiche is a flat sheet of film containing miniaturized images of documents, readable only with a magnifying viewer.
Before digital archives, libraries stored newspapers, journals, and records on microfiche to save space: I spent hours scrolling through microfiche in the basement of the university library.
The technology is now largely obsolete but persists in some archives.
