microfiches

Shrunken document sheets

Microfiches is the plural of microfiche—flat sheets of photographic film containing miniaturized images of documents, readable only with a magnifying viewer.

Libraries once stored newspapers, journals, and archives on microfiche to save space: I spent hours scrolling through microfiches of old city directories.

Largely replaced by digital archives.
