born-digital

Created electronically first

Born-digital describes content created in digital form from the start, rather than converted from physical originals.

A document typed on a computer is born-digital; a scanned paper document is not.

The term matters in archiving and preservation, where born-digital materials pose different challenges than digitized ones: The library's born-digital collection includes emails, websites, and digital photographs.
