markup languages

Structured text systems

Markup languages are systems of annotations that structure and format text documents.

Unlike programming languages, they describe how content should be displayed or organized rather than executing operations.

HTML marks up web pages with tags indicating headings, paragraphs, and links.

XML structures data for transfer between systems.

Markdown uses simple punctuation for formatting: asterisks for italics, hashtags for headers.

The "markup" metaphor comes from editors' handwritten annotations on manuscripts.
