whitespace

Gaps between words

Whitespace is the blank areas in text or design—the spaces between words, lines, paragraphs, or visual elements.

In typography and graphic design, whitespace (also called negative space) gives content room to breathe: The layout needs more whitespace.

In programming, whitespace refers to characters that create space but don't print—spaces, tabs, and line breaks: The parser ignores whitespace between tokens.
