Bracket-based text styling
BBCode is a markup language used on internet forums and message boards to format text.
Tags appear in square brackets rather than angle brackets: [b]bold[/b], [i]italic[/i], [url]link[/url].
The format emerged in the 1990s as a safer alternative to HTML, preventing users from inserting malicious code while still allowing basic formatting.
Though largely supplanted by Markdown and rich-text editors, BBCode persists on older forums and certain communities.
