parsing

Breaking down syntax

Parsing is the act of analyzing something by breaking it into its component parts.

In grammar, to parse a sentence is to identify each word's function—subject, verb, object.

In computing, parsing means processing input data according to formal rules: The program parses the XML file.

More loosely, parsing means working through something to extract meaning: I'm still parsing what she said.
