special characters
Punctuation and symbols
Special characters are symbols on a keyboard that aren't letters or numbers—punctuation marks, mathematical operators, and typographic symbols like @, #, $, %, &, and *.
In computing, the term often refers to characters that have reserved functions in programming languages or that require escaping in passwords and code: Your password must contain at least one special character.
