markup language

Text formatting syntax

A markup language is a system of annotations that structures and formats text.

Tags or codes embedded in a document tell software how to display or process the content: HTML is the markup language of web pages.

Unlike programming languages, markup languages describe appearance or structure rather than performing computations.

Common examples include HTML, XML, and Markdown.
