untouchables

India's lowest caste

Untouchables refers to people beyond reach or consequence—either protected from accountability The CEO's inner circle were untouchables or excluded from normal society.

The term historically designated the lowest caste in India's social hierarchy, considered so impure that contact with them polluted others.

That usage is now considered offensive; Dalit is preferred.

In American culture, the Untouchables were federal agents who fought organized crime during Prohibition, so called because they couldn't be bribed.
