colonial administrators

Empire's local officials

Colonial administrators were officials who governed territories on behalf of a colonizing power.

They implemented imperial policies, collected taxes, managed local populations, and maintained order in lands far from the metropolitan center.

The term evokes the bureaucratic machinery of European empires—British district officers in India, French prefects in Indochina, Belgian agents in the Congo.

The colonial administrators rarely spoke local languages and relied heavily on interpreters.
