lugsail

Yard-hung boat canvas

A lugsail is a four-sided sail bent to a yard that hangs obliquely from the mast.

Common on smaller traditional boats like dinghies and fishing craft, lugsails are simpler to rig than other designs.

The name comes from the yard—called a lug—that supports the sail's upper edge.

The lugger rounded the point under full lugsail.
