knout
Tsarist flogging instrument
A knout is a whip used for flogging, historically associated with punishment in imperial Russia.
The instrument had leather thongs attached to a handle, often with metal wire or hooks woven in, making it capable of inflicting severe injury or death.
The prisoner received fifty lashes of the knout.
The word now appears mainly in historical contexts.
