thrashing

A sound defeat

Thrashing is a severe beating or defeat: The team took a thrashing in the playoffs.

It also describes violent, uncontrolled movement—a person thrashing in their sleep, a fish thrashing on the deck.

In computing, thrashing is when a system spends more time swapping data between memory levels than doing useful work, grinding productivity to a halt.
