birching

Bundled switch beating

Birching is beating someone with a birch rod—a bundle of birch twigs bound together.

Historically used as corporal punishment in schools, prisons, and the military: The headmaster ordered a birching for the offending boys.

The practice has largely disappeared from legal systems but persists in some BDSM contexts.
