flogging
Beating with straps
Flogging is beating someone with a whip, rod, or cane, typically as punishment.
Historically common in military and naval discipline, flogging remains a legal penalty in some countries.
The word extends to any severe beating: The team took a flogging in the semifinals.
In British slang, to flog something is to sell it, often aggressively or illicitly: He was flogging watches on the corner.
