scourging
Brutal flogging punishment
Scourging is severe whipping or flogging, especially as punishment or torture.
The term appears most often in religious and historical contexts—Christ's scourging before crucifixion, or medieval penitents scourging themselves.
Figuratively, any harsh affliction may be called a scourging: the scourging of the coastline by hurricanes.
