deserts
Leaves high dry
Deserts has two pronunciations with different meanings.
With stress on the first syllable, it's the plural of desert—arid, barren regions.
With stress on the second syllable, it means what someone deserves, almost always in the phrase just deserts: The swindler finally got his just deserts.
The spelling trips people up—it's deserts, not "desserts," though both are pronounced the same.
