kafir

Stout-stalked cereal crop

Kafir is an Arabic word meaning "unbeliever" or "infidel," used in Islamic contexts for those who reject the faith.

In South Africa, kafir became a viciously derogatory term for Black Africans—among the most offensive words in South African English, comparable to nigger in American usage.

The slur emerged from colonial-era Arabic influence along East African trade routes.
