kafirs

Islamic term: disbelievers

Kafir is an Arabic-derived term meaning "disbeliever" or "infidel," used in Islamic contexts for non-Muslims.

In South Africa, it became a deeply offensive racial slur for Black Africans, comparable in force to "nigger" in American English.

The South African usage is now illegal in that country and considered hate speech.

The word also names a grain sorghum (sometimes spelled kaffir), and appears in compounds like kaffir lime, a citrus fruit used in Southeast Asian cooking—though some now avoid even these agricultural terms due to the slur's toxicity.
