federal jurisdiction
Government's legal reach
Federal jurisdiction is the authority of federal courts to hear and decide cases, as opposed to state courts.
In the U.S., federal jurisdiction covers matters involving federal law, the Constitution, disputes between states, and cases where parties are from different states: The case was moved to federal court because it raised questions of federal jurisdiction.
Jurisdiction can also refer to the geographic or subject-matter reach of any federal authority.
