ice dam
Roof edge obstruction
An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof, preventing melted snow from draining.
Water backs up behind the dam and can leak into the house, causing damage to walls and ceilings.
Ice dams result from uneven roof temperatures—warm spots melt snow, which refreezes at colder eaves.
On a larger scale, an ice dam is a natural barrier of ice blocking a river or glacial lake, which can cause catastrophic flooding when it breaks.
