wicking

Drawing liquid away

Wicking is the movement of liquid through a porous material by capillary action—the way a paper towel absorbs a spill or a candle wick draws melted wax upward.

In clothing, wicking describes fabrics designed to pull sweat away from the skin: moisture-wicking athletic wear.

The term comes from the noun wick.
